Manchester City has reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign striker Erling Haaland, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Haaland will join the club from Dortmund.
Haaland, 21, will join Manchester City this summer and is expected to become one of the club’s highest-paid players as a result of his new contract. According to reports, he will not surpass midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who earns around £375,000 per week, as the club’s highest earner.
A source has said that Haaland’s release clause is €60 million and that he is expected to sign a five-year contract with the club at the Etihad Stadium.
‘Manchester City are pleased to report that we have achieved an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund regarding the transfer of striker Erling Haaland to the club on 1st July 2022,’ read a statement from the club.
“The deal is still subject to the club reaching an agreement with the player,” said the club.
Dortmund anticipates the deal to have a “positive impact on the main profits numbers for the 2022-2024 financial year” in the region of €35-40 million once it is completed.
The signing of Haaland will bring Pep Guardiola’s quest for a striker to a close, after his unsuccessful bid to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane last summer.
Despite competition from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to get him, City was successful in their pursuit of the Norway international.
Haaland joined Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, after he scored 41 goals in 41 appearances for the club the previous season. Since making his international debut with Norway in 2019, he has already scored 15 goals in 17 games, a remarkable achievement considering his young age. This season, he has scored 36 goals in 34 games for both his club and his nation.
City manager Pep Guardiola intimated earlier on Tuesday that a deal to sign the striker was close to being finalized.
According to the agreement, Haaland will play for the same club that his father, Alfie, represented from 2000 to 2003. According to ESPN, Alfie Haaland played a crucial part in the discussions with Manchester City when the club’s representative, Mino Raiola, was ill. Raiola, who represented players like Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, died last month at the age of 54.
The Borussia Dortmund club has been resigned to losing Haaland for some time now, after their agreement to a release clause in his contract that became activated ahead of this summer’s transfer season.
