Europe’s Largest Nuclear Plant: On Wednesday, Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that Russia’s military troops had assumed control of the land surrounding Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
The Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna also stated in an official letter to the Director-General dated March 1 that staff at the plant continued to work “In the normal mode of operation, work on ensuring nuclear safety and monitoring radiation. The radiation levels have not changed.”
Ukraine had previously informed the IAEA on March 1 that all of its nuclear power reactors were still under the supervision of the state operator.
The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) announced in a statement this morning that it was maintaining communications with the country’s nuclear facilities and that the NPPs were regularly operating.
With six of Ukraine’s 15 nuclear reactors, the Zaporizhzhia plant is the largest of the country’s nuclear power plants.
