“The accused pulled my daughter towards himself and tried making forceful physical contact with her. My daughter immediately freed herself from the clutches of the accused and ran outside the room.”
“While I was training, the accused (Singh) called me separately. I refused but I was called again. He pulled my t-shirt, slid his hand under it and touched my naval on the pretext of checking my breath.”
I repeatedly resisted his attempts and tried to push him away from me to which he replied by saying ‘Zyada smart bann rhi hai kya? Aage koi competition nahi khelne kya tune?’ (Acting too smart? You don’t want to play in any tournaments in the future?”
All these accusations stated above have been given by all the Wrestlers along with a minor who have filed an FIR against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Singh against whom all the prominent wrestler of the country Vinesh Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh, Bajrang Punia, and many more have been protesting against him since the Beginning of the Year.
The Accusations
Brij Bhushan Singh, along with Vinod Tomar, the former assistant Secretary of the WFI, have been accused under:
- Section354 (assault or criminal force with intent to outrage modesty)
- 354A (making sexually coloured remarks) and
- 354D (stalking)
- Tomar has been indicted under IPC’s sections 109 (abetment), 354, 354A, and 506 (criminal intimidation)
Along with this Brij Bhushan Singh has also been booked under “Prima Facie Offence” Section 10 of the Protection of Child from Sexual Offence Act. Although, under this Act, the accused are detained by the Government but Mr. Brij Bhushan has been untouched till now.
The Accusation under POCSO was later changed by the complainant i.e. the Minor’s father because of the “threats” that he received whose name he is scared to put out.
No strict actions were taken against the President despite facing condemnation from UWW United World Wrestling Federation, even the imminent threat to get WFI ousted from the Federation.
It is also very interesting to note that within 7 Hours of being detained after the horrific event that happened on 28th of May, 2024, an FIR was registered against them.
Whereas it took 3 Months of protest in the scorching Delhi heat for the Wrestlers, only to get their complaints registered as FIR, let alone the Investigations.
Brij Bhushan Singh’s Response
When Singh got to know about the allegations that he has been accused with, he simply responded that he would “Hang Himself” if any of the stated allegations are proved against him. We have to note that Brij Bhushan Singh is an MP on behalf of the ruling party from Uttar Pradesh. Six Times he has become a member of Parliament, he is one of the Strongmen (Bahubali’s) of the State. Charged under 38 Criminal Cases ranging from Theft to Terrorism. Still, he is contesting for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Kesariganj. While the majority of the Federation was aware towards his unethical behavior, they chose to remain silent because if the complaint reached the President, he usually caused a lot of problems in their professional careers. They usually kept quiet because they came from poor families, and he took advantage of that.
The Court’s Orders
On the 4th of May, 2024. The Supreme Court of India also closed the Petition taking into consideration the fact that the Police had already registered an FIR. The former Chef Justice of India Justice Madan B Lokur expressed his anger at the ways the Police were handling the entire situation with regard to the investigations regarding the case.
