BJP whereas, has put a stance of commemorating the day as Liberation Day.
K Chandrashekhar Rao (also known as KCR) announced on Sunday that ‘Telangana National Integration Day’ would be celebrated to mark the merger of the erstwhile state of Hyderabad with the India union.
The announcement by the TRS government followed the appeal made by Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM and Hyderabad MP) to Rao. He wrote and urged over the motion that this day should be called ‘National Integration Day’ rather than ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’. He also elucidated the rationale behind the same.
Owaisi said that the struggle experienced by the people of the erstwhile Hyderabad state against colonialism, feudalism, and autocracy commemorates the symbol of national integration and is extensively more than a circumstance of the liberation of a piece of land.
According to the statement by CMO, “Telangana National Integration Day” is all set to be celebrated from September 16-18.
Earlier, the centre stated that 75 years of liberation of Hyderabad would be celebrated on September 17.
The day would be marked as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’. The announcement came amidst the rising heat in the polls of Telangana.
The day has its significance as it marks the merger of erstwhile Hyderabad under Nizam rule with the Indian union in 1948. The celebration would mark the commemoration of tribute to the ones who gave up their lives during the merger under the Nizam rule.
The state of Hyderabad under the Nizam included the whole of current-day Telangana, the Marathwada region in Maharashtra that included the districts of Aurangabad, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Osmanabad, Parbhani and districts of Kalaburagi, Bellary Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Vijayanagara and Bidar in current day Karnataka.
G Kishan Reddy (Union Culture Minister) said that the central government would be holding a year-long extravaganza to Mark the significance of Hyderabad’s liberation. Amit Shah would be the chief guest at the inaugural event which is on September 17.
He further said that he has written an invitation to Eknath Shinde (Chief Minister of Maharashtra), KCR (Chief Minister of Telangana), and Basavaraj Bommai (Chief Minister of Karnataka) to come and attend the inaugural event at the Hyderabad Parade Grounds, which is known as the Nizam Vimochanotsava Amrutotsvam.
Prior to these celebrations, Maharashtra and Karnataka commemorates the significance of this day as Marathwada Liberation Day and Hyderabad-Karnataka Liberation Day, respectively. However, the centre aims at celebrating this day across the 3 states and taking the celebration directly under the wing. The letter highlights the intent behind the large-scale celebrations this year. As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the government is identifying events and individuals that have not been given the attention that was deserved over the years.
September 17 to be a day of celebration for Telangana
As per the statement given by the cultural ministry, the liberation of Hyderabad was possible due to the swift and timely action taken by Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel (India’s first Minister of Home Affairs. The action was taken under Operation Polo which was a military operation that culminated in the annexation of Hyderabad with India’s republic.
Telangana government has however announced on Saturday (September 3, 2022) that they will be celebrating September 17 as ‘Telangana National Unity Diamond Jubliee Inauguration Day’. The 3-day celebration would start with the ‘Telangana National Integration Day’.
A statement from CMO stated that Chief Minister KCR would unfurl the flag following which massive rallies would be carried out and freedom fighters would be honoured.
Grand ceremonies would be held in all 33 districts. The celebration would mark the evolution that Telangana has undergone in the past years, from being a monarchy to a democracy. Telangana would encounter national unity festival for a year.
BJP has insisted that the day should be celebrated as liberation day. Whereas TRS and Congress continue to commemorate the day as the “day of the merger”.
Amidst the aggressive campaigns for the elections which are due next year, BJP leaders have put a stance that TRS isn’t willing to celebrate the Telangana liberation day because of the pressure from Majlis (AIMIM).
