A third round of discussions with Russia on halting the violence will take place tomorrow, according to one of Ukraine’s negotiators.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke with his US colleague Joe Biden on the phone today to discuss financial help and penalties on Russia as his country faces a growing onslaught.Â
Here’s a 5-point summary of the key story:Â
- Russian soldiers are closing in on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, from the north and west. The northern town of Chernihiv, where dozens of residents have been murdered in shelling, missile assaults, and air raids, has been described as a scene of extensive damage.Â
- If Western nations seek to impose a no-fly zone in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of
“colossal and devastating repercussions not only for Europe but also for the whole globe.”Â
- A third round of discussions with Russia on halting the violence will take place tomorrow, according to one of Ukraine’s negotiators. In a phone chat with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Mr Putin stated that Moscow is willing to talk about Ukraine provided all of its conditions are satisfied.Â
- A number of foreign networks, including the BBC, CNN, RAI in Italy, and ARD and ZDF in Germany, have announced that they will cease reporting from Russia after the country approved a legislation prohibiting the dissemination of “false news” about its invasion with prison sentences of up to 15 years.Â
After a historic vote at the UN Human Rights Council demanding an inquiry into abuses committed during the conflict on Ukraine, Russia is more isolated than ever, with only Eritrea standing with Moscow.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine last week, the UN estimates that over 1.37 million people have fled to neighbouring countries.
