These districts include Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Jorhat, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Majuli, Dhemaji, and Kamrup (metropolitan). Flooding, as per the reports, has been the third time this season, affecting 199 villages and also Dispur, the state capital.
Past few days in the region
There was heavy rainfall in the regions for the past few days, resulting in landslides, which have been common for the people surviving there in these kinds of circumstances.
The ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) has provided the numbers of the badly affected villages and people struggling with their life and death. The numbers of the affected persons have been reported to be around 50,836 mainly in the districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Dibrugarh.
Landslides have been a common occurrence in the region as the state is facing heavy rainfall, especially at the project site of 2000MW Lower Subansiri Hydro-power project which is located very close to the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh Border at Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district of Assam.
As mentioned, landslides have been common, several have been witnessed. A portion of the hill located near the project site has fallen on the diversion course of the Subansiri river on Wednesday. Some sources even confirmed that the work on the almost finished project has been called off due the frequent landslides in the areas, but the fact is that the officials of NHPC haven’t confirmed about the suspension of work.
The devastation from the floods continued at the banks of Brahmaputra river at the periphery of the Dibrugarh town in Nagaghuli and Maijan areas. The district’s officials have asked the people residing in these areas to be ready for the evacuation process if the conditions or situation demands. Alert has also been issued in mostly affected areas of the floods.
Not only Assam but Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed the floods in its East Siang district. The heavy rainfall in the area has been causing the river level to rise. This compelled the official authorities to take action by issuing a red alert, mainly for the region which is low-lying.
Rivers raising their “standards”
The authorities have made it clear that the levels of rivers and their tributaries are rising due to the heavy rainfall. In the lower Assam areas, the floodwater levels of the tributaries of major rivers like Brahmaputra, Pagladiya, Puthimari, Gaurang, Sankosh, Manas and Beki are on a continuous rise. While in the upper and central parts of Assam, as the Central Water Commission has said, the water levels of the rivers Brahmaputra, Kosili, Subansiri, and Dhansiri are also rising.
