2022 has been a very good year for AEW tag team FTR, just as it has been for Manchester City. Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood have accumulated success after accomplishment while competing in some of the year’s most memorable matches. So, what’s one more award to add to the list?
When AEW revealed their weekly rankings today, FTR was named as the number one contender for the AEW World Tag Team Championships. This is nothing new for FTR, as a check at the rankings over the previous several months will reveal that today’s #1 rating marks Wheeler and Harwood’s 14th consecutive week as AEW’s top rivals.Ā
The durability of FTR’s reign at the top of the tag team rankings is all the more astounding given that we are only 27 weeks into 2022, which means Harwood and Wheeler have been the top contenders for more than half of the year. The tandem took the top place for the first time on April 6; later that night, they defeated the existing AEW World Tag Team Champions, the Young Bucks, in the main event of AEW “Dynamite.”
FTR’s qualifications, apart from the streak, speak for themselves. Harwood and Wheeler have now held the AAA World Tag Team Championships since October 16, 2021, when they defeated the Lucha Brothers for the titles on AEW “Dynamite,” the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Championships since April 1 when they defeated the Briscoes at Supercard of Honor, and the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships, which they recently won by defeating Roppongi Vice, Jeff Cobb, and Great O’Khan at AEW x NJPW Forbidden door.Ā
With all of the belts in FTR’s control, the Young Bucks, who won the AEW World Tag Team Championships in a ladder match at AEW “Dynamite: Road Rager” a few weeks ago, are being eyed for another possible showdown. As of now, the two teams are 1-1 against one other, with FTR winning the last bout and the Bucks defeating FTR for the AEW World Tag Team Championships at AEW Full Gear in November 2020.
