Film Gangubai Kathiawadi is currently one of the most talked-about and awaited films; everybody in Bollywood is amazed to see Alia’s acting, dance, expressions. Since the trailer headlined ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ was released,
the film has become a center of attention. Alia Bhatt’s titular character in the biographical drama is based on the real-life personality Gangubai Kothewali who was sold into prostitution at a young age and ran a brothel in the red-light area of Kamathipura in Mumbai in the 1960s.
Alia Bhatt is a well-known actress; since her first movie (student of the year), she has been counted on the list of the top actresses.
A week before the release of Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai, Kathiawadi has hit with another fresh controversy, a roadblock for the team. Gangubai’s family – her adopted son Babu Raoji Shah and her granddaughter Bharti have expressed their viewpoints over the film.

Gangubai was represented in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie as entirely wrong and baseless. It is vulgar. You are portraiting a social activist as a prostitute. You have made her [Gangubai] look like a vamp and lady don.” Which family would like it?
Before, we used to narrate our grandmother’s stories proudly, but after the movie’s trailer was released, we were left with no words.

Our fight Begins in 2020 when his (adopted) son came to know about the movie being made on the life of gangubai, seeing the picture of his mother in the film’s promo. Since then, the family has been hiding.
In a recent interview of Gangubai’s adopted son Babu Raoji Shah and granddaughter Bharti, they slammed the film, claiming that the makers had turned her into a prostitute, “My mother has been turned into a prostitute.”
Shah has also conveyed his disappointment about the film, that people are now endlessly gossiping about his mother
Bharti( Gangubai’s granddaughter ) has also shown her outrage against the film; the maker didn’t take any permission before writing the book and making the film, claiming that they have defamed their family for greed.
My maternal grandmother had adopted four children two daughters, Shakuntala Ranjit Kawi (Bharti’s mother) and Sushila Reddy, and two sons, Babu Raoji Shah and Rajinikanth Raoji Shah. We are from this family, but now we are termed as ‘illegal.’ When our grandmother went through the adoption, at that time strict adoption laws were not in place.”
She worked for the upliftment of the sex workers in Kamathipura throughout her life.
The lawyer said Notice had already been sent to the makers.
“We have sent notices to the film director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Hussain Zaidi, writer of Mafia Queens of Mumbai: Stories of Women from the Ganglands, from where Gangubai Kathiawadi was adapted. However, they didn’t get a response at all.
In 2021, Gangubai’s adopted son Babu Raoji Shah had filed a petition against the film. Later, the High Court of Bombay refused to stay the release of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and granted an interim stay on the criminal defamation proceedings against the makers. The court had even summoned Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the case.
Currently, Alia and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are in Berlin for the premiere of Gangubai Kathiawadi, and they are yet to react to the accusation of Gangubai’s family.
Gangubai Kathiawadi releases in cinemas on February 25 before the film is scheduled to be released in September 2020 because of the unusual situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Alia Bhatt resumed the shooting in October and completed it last month. Before Alia, the role was supposed to be played Priyanka copra Jonas.
