India is planning to organize a 3-day Global Conference on evolving Green Hydrogen Landscape and solutions to implement it successfully on an international level.
The conference will be held between 5th to 7th July in the capital city of India, Delhi. The event would take place in Vigyan Bhawan where scientific and industrial global leaders will come together to discuss the growth, potential, future and smart solutions for the Green Hydrogen value chain.
The conference is going to be organized and handled by The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, along with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Office of Principal Scientific Advisor and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
Experts all over the world will gather at one place to discuss and give ideas on green H2 production, its storage- optimal process and means, and downstream applications. Apart from this the agenda also includes discussion on Green financing, Human resource upskilling and startup initiatives in this sector.
Various Demos, prototypes by PSUs, private companies and startups will be presented along with B2B and B2G meetings.
Green Hydrogen Mission
The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved by the union cabinet in the beginning of January this year. India aims to become the global hub for producing, utilizing and exporting technologies related to Green H2.
The mission aims to achieve a target of basic production of 5 MMT of green hydrogen per annum by the year 2030.
The secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable energy- Bhupinder Singh Bhalla said that the conference is the first major event on green hydrogen and is the first big step towards their goal of building a reliable and strong green hydrogen ecosystem.
To create a willingness for others to invest in hydrogen creation, the ministry also seems to be working on providing incentives for the production of green hydrogen and electrolyser manufacturing, a device used to separate oxygen and hydrogen in water. Incentives will be first given based on the capacity of hydrogen plants set up and in the second model, they will be given for consumption, based on DAM (Demand aggregation Model).
For the mission, the total amount incentive has been decided to be more than Rs. 17,000 Crores until 2030. It will not be given all at once but in parts. After seeing the trend the first time, decisions will be made on how to use the second part of the Incentive.
Out of these incentives, around Rs. 8 Lakh crores for the mission would require investment from other sources, expressed Bhalla. For this, the government is in talks with different banking and financial systems, private sector and other stakeholders. The green hydrogen industry will be heavily supported by the government to show its significance and attract funding from the sector.
Why does India need a Green Hydrogen Mission?
India has taken a pledge to go carbon Neutral by 2070 and has been working towards it constantly. It has been promoting electric vehicles, production of renewable energy among other measures.
Green Hydrogen has the potential to become a fuel that is most cost-effective as hydrogen is available all around us in the form of water. India needs to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, not only to go carbon neutral but also to reduce the country’s dependence of foreign nations for fuel.
The country is also abundant in natural resources due to its favorable geographical location, which gives India an edge in creating and developing green hydrogen over other nations.
The country is also looking into developing Green Hydrogen Hubs- an area meant for production and consumption of hydrogen in close proximity. The will be set up near major hubs to help in exporting of the green hydrogen.
