There is no stopping for the Indian grandmaster in the Aimchess Rapid online event. Just the day after Arjun Erigaisi beat the World Champion Magnus Carlsen for the first time, another youngster Gukesh Dommaraju stunned the Norweigan with white.
With this win, Gukesh became the youngest player to defeat Carlsen during his reign as a World Champion. Interestingly this record was held by another Indian prodigy, Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa R previously.
Within two days two youngsters, Arjun and Gukesh have beaten Carlsen, inarguably the greatest player of this generation. Both have already achieved the 2700+ rating.
Former record holder, Pragg beat Norweigan giant in February in the 8th round of Airthings Masters. He was 16 years, 6 months and 10 days old. Gukesh beat him when he was 16 years and 4 months old.
After the match, Gukesh stated that although it was a great achievement to beat the 3 times world rapid champion he wasn’t very proud of the game he had played
Carlsen initially had an upper hand but his one wrong move turned the game towards the Indian prodigy’s side.
Carlsen was in full praise of his young opponent. He said that Gukesh had been impressive and though the rapid wasn’t the Indian’s best effort, still a win should feel nice.
After the three rounds, Polish Jan-Krzysztof Duda is at the top leading with 25/36 points with Mamedyarov at the second.
Among the Indians, Gukesh is at 3rd followed by Erigaisi with 21 points each. Anish Giri is in the 8th and Vidith Gujrathi is in the 10th position. It must be noted that half of the participants will be out after round 15 so Giri and Gujrathi would be fighting for the final spots.
