The Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections are expected to be close, with the opposition Congress suffering from factionalism and disjointed leadership among its state units while the incumbent BJP is constrained by anti-incumbency feelings.
Tussle Between BJP & Congress in Himachal Pradesh
In a week, on November 12, voters in Himachal Pradesh will choose representatives to fill the 68 seats in its Legislative Assembly. In the State, where the Congress and the BJP have alternately formed governments for more than three decades, many voters have voiced conflicted feelings about both parties. Eleven of the BJP’s current MLAs, including one Minister, have been denied candidacy, and two other Ministers have had their districts changed. Some voters believe the BJP is making a deliberate effort to counteract the anti-incumbency effect by choosing fresh faces to run as candidates.
Candidates, Constituencies & Political Parties
The AAP has put up candidates for 67 seats, compared to the BJP and Congress who are running in each of the State’s 68 Assembly districts. Other parties in the race include the Bahujan Samajwadi Party, which is running in 53 constituencies, the Rashtriya Devbhoomi Party, which is running in 29, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is running in 11, the Himachal Jan Kranti Party, which is running in six, and the Hindu Samaj Party and Swabhiman Party, which are running in three seats each. Aside from the 99 Independent candidates, the Himachal Janata Party, Bhartiya Veer Dal, Sainik Samaj Party, Rashtriya Lok Niti Party, and Communist Party of India are all represented by one candidate.
Indian National Congress & It’s Manifesto
The Indian National Congress, which is attempting to seize control of the State, unveiled its electoral platform for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly election on Saturday. The election is scheduled for November 12. The party also promised to establish the Agriculture and Horticulture Commission and to reinstate the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for public employees. This commission would then set the minimum procurement price for fruits, including apples, after consulting with farmers and horticulturists. Additionally, the party pledged to construct mobile clinics in every community and to provide 1 lakh government employment. According to the manifesto, a provision will also be created to help young people start their own businesses.
To that end, 10 crore rupees would be handed to each Assembly district in the State, and young people will also be granted interest-free loans. The manifesto was jointly launched in Shimla by the leaders of the Congress party in charge of Himachal Pradesh, Rajeev Shukla, Bhupesh Baghel, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, and Pratibha Singh, the party’s campaign committee chairman. The manifesto said that a new tourist policy would be created and that the “Smart Village” initiative would be launched to encourage tourism in rural areas.
Bhartiya Janta Party Represents Stability & Service- Narendra Modi
Narendra Modi, the prime minister, declared on Saturday in the state that the BJP represents stability and service. Modi declared that development would be the party’s top goal at a public event in Mandi’s Sundernagar. On November 12, Modi predicted that Himachal will vote in favour of the BJP, saying that every vote would determine the course of the state’s growth during the ensuing 25 years. Shyam Saran Negi, the nation’s first voter after becoming independent, passed away on Saturday.

Counting To Be Done on December 6
There are 388 men and 24 women running for office out of the 412 total candidates. According to official records, there are 55.93 lakh registered voters in the State who would use 7,881 polling places to cast their votes. Will the Congress continue the state’s long practice of ousting the incumbent governments since 1985, or will the BJP rewrite history and win re-election in a swing state? About 30 seats in the state hold the key to the two political adversaries’ future. The Election Commission announced dates for the Himachal Pradesh elections last week. Single phase polling is due in the state on Nov 12. Counting will take on December 6.
