A floating restaurant that was one of the famous landmarks of Hong Kong sunk after the restaurant was towed away from the harbor where it worked for nearly 50 years. Its parent company stated that The Jumbo Restaurant turned over in the South China Sea while it was on its way to a location that was unannounced.
According to Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises, it was a very sad incident but thankfully no crew members were injured. It added by stating that the water depth at the scene is over 1000 meters, which makes it extremely difficult to perform salvage works. The marine engineers had been hired to examine the floating restaurant. And also hoardings were installed on the vessel before the trip and all other relevant approvals had been acquired.
The restaurant was closed in March 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic hit after almost a decade of financial woes. Melco International Development, the operator stated that the business had not been making a profit since 2013, and its losses had been increasing and exceeded 100 million Hong Kong dollars. The restaurant was still costing millions every year in maintaining its fees. Dozen businesses and organizations had to decline an invitation to take it over at no cost.
There were more than 3 million guests who are believed to have eaten in this popular restaurant and have had its Cantonese cuisine over the years which even included the queen, Tom Cruise , and Richard Branson.
