Hindu Scripture provides Inspiration
The leading light of the film, Cillian Murphy, who essays the character of American theoretical physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer, recently admitted that he had read the sacred Hindu Text ‘Bhagavad Gita’ as a part of his preparation for fitting the role.
The 47-year-old Irish actor confessed this astonishing fact in a tête-à-tête with Sucharita Tyagi, a notable film critic. Ever since this fact was disclosed, the public has had their socks blown! The fans and admirers of Oppenheimer have inundated social media platforms with a torrent of comments and expressions!
‘I read the Bhagavad Gita’ quoted Murphy while he was preparing himself for the role. After perusing the fundamental text of Hinduism, he found the book to be a ‘beautiful text’ and ‘very inspiring’. For Murphy, the insights from the Gita offered Oppenheimer a sense of solace and support which is needed in his life.
Although when asked to summarise his illuminations from the book, he answered light-heartedly that he did not wish to be ‘grilled’ on it and simply repeated that he found it to be ‘very beautiful’.
Oppenheimer: A Follower of Bhagavad Gita?
It is believed that Mr. Oppenheimer was, de facto. a zealot of the holy Hindu scripture not at a religious or spiritual level, but purely from an intellectual basis. He had read the Bhagavad Gita himself and was ‘inspired by it’.
Furthermore, It’s gloriously remembered that after the successful testing of the planet’s first atomic bomb in 1945, in New Mexico, Oppenheimer famously recalled verses from the Bhagavad Gita and is said to have spoken the acclaimed line ‘I have become the death, The destroyer of worlds’ which can be found in the text.
“Now I am the destroyer of worlds,” says Oppenheimer
These iconic words by the Los Alamos Laboratory’s Director during the evolution of the first-ever atomic bomb, find recurrent utterances in the biopic.
The exceptional scientist was profoundly influenced by pensive and philosophical writings, like the Bhagavad Gita. He drew inspiration and guidance from these texts for his vocational endeavours as seen when he utters the phrase “Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”, which was spoken by Lord Krishna in his counselling monologue to Arjuna before the Great War.
The Documentary titled ‘The Decision to Drop the Bomb’, by NBC News, released in 1965 revolved around Oppenheimer and his emotions after the success of the Trinity Test in New Mexico. Amidst overwhelming feelings and a diverse range of opinions from masses across the globe, Oppenheimer is believed to have reminisced the line from Bhagavad Gita.
The didactic speech by Krishna, trying to wheedle Arjuna into prioritising his duties despite the ramifications echoes with the feelings of the Scientist. He too was conflicted about the design of the hazardous Atomic Bomb, having the potential to kill millions. But, because this was the only way to beat the Nazis and restore world peace, he accepted this creation and went on with it.
