The 2024 T20 World Cup will follow a revised format, with the first round being followed by a Super Eight stage. The 20 participating nations will be split into four groups, each consisting of five teams.
The top two teams in each of the two Super Eight groups will then advance to the semifinals, which will be followed by the tournament final.

The Super 12 followed the first round in the 2021 and 2022 seasons; however, for the following competition, the top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the Super Eight phase, where they will be further separated into two groups of four each. The top two teams in each of the two Super Eight groups will then advance to the semifinals, which will be followed by the championship match.
In total, 12 teams have earned spots in the 2024 T20 World Cup. As the tournament’s hosts, the United States and the West Indies automatically qualified. The top eight finishers from the 2022 tournament have also advanced, including the incumbent champions England and the runners-up Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the Netherlands.
The top two teams in the ICC T20I standings on the qualification date of November 14 are Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who are the other two teams. There are still eight open seats that will be filled through the qualifiers.
Moving away from the global qualifier structure, the regional competition that determines the final berths will receive more attention during the 2024 competition.
According to a news release from the ICC, regional play will determine the remaining eight berths for the event in 2024.
“While South Africa claimed 2024 qualification by virtue of their top-eight finish, Zimbabwe were unable to capitalise on their strong start to the campaign, finishing last in the Super 12 group to be sent back to regional qualification,” the ICC said in the release.
For the Americas, East Asia, and the Pacific there will be one qualifying berth each, while for Africa, Asia, and Europe there will be two qualifying spots each.
The T20 World Cup was won this year by England, who defeated Pakistan on November 13 in Melbourne. They achieved their second ICC T20 World Cup victory with this.
In the previous two T20 World Cups, there were two groups of four teams in the first round that comprised both teams that placed between ninth and twelve in the previous tournament and nations that qualified for the event through the qualifying round.
The top two teams from each group in the first round joined the remaining eight teams that had previously earned a spot in the Super 12 stage.
