India takes over G20 presidency, 100 ASI sites to be illuminated

New Delhi: India has assumed the presidency of G20 for next year from today. G20 is an international forum made up of 19 countries and the European Union, representing the world’s major developed and emerging economies. G20 represents 85% of the world GDP, 75% of world trade, and two-thirds of the total world population. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday tweeted that India looks forward to working on encouraging sustainable lifestyles, and depoliticizing the global supply of food, fertilizers, and medical products among other subjects.

India will hold The Group of Twenty summit at the Heads of State level on 9 and 10 September 2023 in New Delhi. India will also conduct over 200 meetings across 55 locations in India over the next year. India’s presidency has come at a time of geopolitical instability, the Russia-Ukraine war, global food, energy, and climate crisis. India’s priorities will focus on ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future. 

Illumination of ASI sites

To celebrate India’s presidency of The Group of Twenty, a hundred centrally-protected monuments including UNESCO world heritage sites will be illuminated with The Group of Twenty logo from 1-7 December 2022. These sites include Delhi’s Red Fort, Purana Qila, and Humayun Tomb. Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat and Konark Sun Temple in Odisha to Sher Shah Suri’s Tomb in Bihar will also be illuminated with G20 logo for a week.
