The government is announcing the decision at a time when the opposition is constantly targeting them on the issue of unemployment. The urban unemployment rate of the country jumped to 12.6% in the April to June quarter of 2021, compared to January – March quarter. But the latest periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) which is released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), shows that the urban unemployment rate fell from 20.8 % which was the status of unemployment in the country during the 1st wave of covid19 pandemic.
Earlier this year, the government announced in parliament that there are vacancies of 8.72 lakhs in the central government departments as of March 1, 2020. Further, the government said it has over 40 lakh sanctioned, but there are only 32 lakh employees in place. The government has been working on filling up those vacancies over the years, but success was not achieved in that direction.
Where are the vacancies:
Reports say that maximum vacancies are there in the big ministries, like Defence (Civil), Railway, and Revenue. As per government information, against nearly 15 lakh sanctioned posts in the Railways,2.3 lakh posts are vacant in the railway ministry.
The sanctioned strength of the defence is 6.33 lakh and against it, the vacancies of the department is 2.5 lakhs. In the revenue department, there are nearly 74,000 vacancies and the sanctioned strength is 1.78 lakh employees. The sanctioned post in the Home department is 10.8 lakh and the vacancy in the department is 1.3 lakh post.
The opposition says it’s all jumle- baazi:
As soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced through twitter the recruitment of 10 lakhs people in the next 18 months, the Congress party immediately took a dig at the Prime Minister and asked for how long will “jumle- baaz” continue. Newly elected Rajya Sabha MP and Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said when Modi was elected to power he promised to give two crore jobs every year, and going by that logic 16 crore jobs should have been provided till today.
In a tweet, the Communist Party Of India ( CPI) said that being “ miserably failed” to keep his promise of giving crores of jobs every year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi now to make up for his failure announced to recruit 10 lakh jobs in the next year and a half.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President, Mayawati, also joined other opposition leaders in questioning the Modi government on 10 lakh recruits, announced by the Prime Minister today. She questioned whether it is an “election mirage”.She said that her party has been raising its voice both inside and outside the parliament, to fill up the vacant post present for SCs, STs and OBs in various government departments. While many from the opposition think it’s a jhumla from the government, it will be interesting to see if the government can stand by its promise or not.
