The Indian presidential election of 2022 will be the country’s 17th presidential election.At the time of the election, Ram Nath Kovind is likely to be the incumbent president. The President of India is mandated by Article 56(1) of the Indian Constitution to serve for a duration of five years. Following the expiration of President Ram Nath Kovind’s term, an election to fill the vacancy is expected to be held.
The BJP has begun reaching out to its allies in preparation for the presidential and vice presidential elections, with Bihar Chairman Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar at the top of the list, whom Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan visited on Thursday evening.
President of India
Under Article 52 of Indian Constitution, there shall always be a President of India. Under the president and vice president election act,1952, the president and vice president are elected. The highest elected office is of the president itself. To regulate all aspects of conducting the election for the president another act added is the provisions of the presidential and vice- presidential election rules,1974.
Article 324
The president holds his office for a tenure of 5 years. After the completing of this tenure, presidential elections are conducted by Election Commission of India. He shall continue notwithstanding the expiry of his term until his successor hold the position(Article 56 of the Indian Constitution).
The notification of the election for the president is issued by the Election Commision of India before 60 days of the completion of the tenure. The election schedule should be fixed so that the new authority for the office of President will be able to start his term before the expiry of the term of outgoing president.
Electoral college
It is made from the members of lok sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabha of each state, and assembly members of each Union territory (under the Article 54 of the Indian Constitution). The president is elected through this electoral college. The weighing of votes is done by dividing the Total population of the state or UT with the total members of the legislative assembly (elected).
