Iran authorities arrested the country’s prominent actress Taraneh Alidoosti on Saturday, 17 Dec after she voiced her support for anti-government demonstrations.
Taraneh Alidoosti Arrested by Iran Authorities
Taraneh Alidoosti, star of Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman which won the Oscars in 2016 was arrested in Iran. On December 8 Adidoosti wrote a post on Instagram supporting Mohsen Shekari who was executed by the state of Iran after being convicted of injuring a member of Iran’s Basij militia and being accused of “waging war against God.” Iran’s State Media reported that Alidoosti was detained a week after her post on Instagram expressing solidarity with Shekari.
In her post, Alidoosti said, “And I’m quoting here his name was Mohsen Shekari, every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action is a disgrace to humanity.” Alidoosti’s Instagram account was suspended as per the report said she did not provide any documents in line with her claims.
Previously Alidoosti also criticized the Iranian government and its police force. In 2020 Alidoosti was sentenced to five-month in prison after criticizing Iran police on Twitter for assaulting a woman. She shared a video on Twitter of a member of Iran’s plainclothes “morality police” insulting and attacking a woman on the street for not wearing the hijab headscarf.
In January 2020, Alidoosti sharply criticized Iranian authorities when she old told her 5.8 million followers on Instagram that “we are not citizens, we are captives, millions of captives,” in a post that was subsequently removed.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been rocked by the protest triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini a 22-year-old woman of Kurdish origin after her arrest for an alleged breach of the country’s dress code. Thousands of people have been detained since the protest erupted and 400 have received jail sentences of up to 10 years for their involvement in the protest. Meanwhile Iran’s Central Bank Governor, Ali Salehabadi blamed the anti-government protest for the fall of the Iranian currency to record lows.
Alidoosti is a woman who makes headlines and that’s precisely why she’s been caught in the Islamic Republic’s crosshairs. Alidoosti has shown support to Iran’s protesters before she posted a daring picture of herself without a hijab, carrying a poster saying, “Women’s Life Freedom.”
But this time the Islamic Republic arrested the actress to make an example. The state media has said that Alidoosti is spreading falsehoods. This is after she condemned the hanging of Mohsen Shekari.
