Indian right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s injury is a matter of grave concern for the BCCI. Formerly the leader of the pace attack, the 29-year-old has been out of action since August last year. He missed the Asia Cup, T20 World Cup in Australia, and the ongoing World Test Championship, and is also away from the IPL.
Once a lethal pace gun of Pakistan, Shoaib Akhtar commented on Bumrah’s recurring struggles with back injuries during an interview with Aaj Tak. The veteran had his share of back problems in the past to back his statements. According to him, orthodox pacers have a side-on bowling action that compensates for the pressure on the back (spine).
One of the potential drawbacks of Bumrah’s bowling action is the stress it places on his back. Because of what, his action involves a significant amount of hyperextension, which can lead to back injuries over time. This is because hyperextension puts excessive pressure on the lower back, which can cause stress fractures or muscle strains.
Jasprit Bumrah, however, uses a frontal action. The constant strain occurring due to his uncanny action makes him prone to severe back injuries. In 2018, Bumrah suffered a stress fracture on his lower back which prompted Michael Holding to say that the injury would trouble him in the future. Boom Boom returned to the Indian squad but now it seems that the injury has aggravated.
Some believe Jasprit should only play crucial games rather than the whole series. If Boom Boom Bumrah continues to be overutilized, another unfortunate aggravation to his back injury could end his career.
“A front-on action has no compensation and with that action, when the back gives in, you can’t escape it irrespective of how much you try.”, said Shoaib Akhtar. He further added, “More training and less matches will prolong his career. He needs a lot of muscle in his back.”
