Succeeding NV Ramana, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit appointed the 49th Chief Justice of India.
The law ministry announced the appointment of the Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. President Droupadi Murmu signed his warrant of appointment. The former Chief Justice, NV Raman, had already started the procedure to appoint a successor in the prior week. The work is now done with Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, the most senior judge, being the Chief Justice.
On August 27th, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will continue his tenure after Justice Raman demits the office on August 26th. He’ll continue the tenure for less than 3 months, retiring on November 8th, 2022. After Justice S.M. Sikri, who was the 13th CJI in 1971, Justice Lalit became the second Chief Justice of India to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar.
“In the exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from August 27, 2022,” stated the Union Law Ministry notification.
Justice Raman, being confident of his choice of Justice Lalit, also heartily congratulated the new Chief Justice. The Supreme Court administration stated that “The incumbent also expressed confidence that Justice Lalit, with his long and rich experience in the bar as well as on the bench, will take the institution to greater heights through his able leadership
Know Chief Justice of India Lalit quickly
- Born on November 9, 1957, in Maharashtra. Aged 64 now Justice Lalit will have a brief tenure as CJI of India.
- Justice Lalit is the son of criminal lawyer UR Lalit, a senior counsel practicing at the Supreme Court of India and a former additional judge of the Delhi High Court.
