A deadly suicide attack took place in Kabul, Afghanistan, outside their foreign ministry and is believed to have caused serious casualties.
Yesterday, a deadly suicide bombing took place in Afghanistan outside the foreign ministry in the capital city of Kabul. The attack was carried out by the ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) affiliate of the ISIS group and resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. The bombing occurred during morning rush hour on a busy street and the powerful blast was heard throughout the city.
Casualties
According to officials, the attacker was on foot and detonated a suicide vest. It was believed that his aim was to enter the ministry building. When unable to enter he committed the blast just outside the ministry. According to the police, the attack killed at least 5 civilians and injured dozens more. But a Taliban official put the toll as high as 20, with the death toll expected to rise.
Emergency NGO, an Italian humanitarian agency, reported that it has received more than 40 wounded people and the casualty continues to rise. As it is believed that the Taliban tend to underplay casualty figures in such incidents.
The suicide bombing is a tragic reminder of the human cost of the conflict in Afghanistan and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. Many civilians have been caught in the crossfire and the violence affects their lives and the infrastructure of the country. This bombing is the latest in a series of deadly attacks in the capital city, raising concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan.
ISIS-K
ISIS-KÂ (Islamic State – Khorasan Province), an offshoot of ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack through its telegram post. The terrorist group is active in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it has carried out several attacks in the region, targeting both government and civilian targets.
If reports are to be believed, then it seems that a Chinese delegation was due to hold talks with the Taliban officials inside the foreign ministry building at the time of the attack.
The Kabul police released a statement, describing the attack as cowardly and that the perpetrators would be held soon and punished. After the Taliban seized and came into power last year, Afghanistan has been bombarded by dozens of blasts, most of which were claimed by ISIS-K.
Future of Afghanistan
The Taliban government seized power from the democratically elected government last year. This is the second time they have seized power in Afghanistan. After they came to power, many other terrorist groups continued to batter the country, which was already reeling from severe crises.
This tragic attack emphasizes the importance of the ongoing efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan and the need for all parties to come together and find a way to end the violence. The international community should continue to provide aid, reconstruction, and humanitarian support to the Afghan people and the government, in order to create a stable environment for peace to take root.
The Afghan (Taliban) government has also been urged to take action against ISIS-K, as the group continues to threaten the stability and security of the country. The government should take steps to improve security and intelligence to prevent such attacks and protect the population from the threat of terrorism.
