The avian flu outbreak (bird flu) has been confirmed in Haripad, in the Alappuzha district of Kerala.
After that, authorities deployed high-level teams on Thursday to cull around 20,000 ducks in the Vazhuthana ward in Haripad municipality.
The flu was first detected in dead ducks in Vazuhthanam Padinjare and Vazuhthanam Vadakke in Haripad.
As per the sources, two farmers had lost their 1500 ducks to the flu in the past. After that, the sample of dead ducks was sent to NIHSAD (National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases) in Bhopal. The test results came out positive for bird influenza.
The presence of the H5N1 subtype of influenza was reported in ducks, district collector V.R. Krishna Teja said.

The District Administration restricted some areas: Champakulam, Nedumudi, Muttar, Veeyapuram, Karuvatta, Thrikkunnapuzha, Thakazhi, Purakkad, Ambalapuzha south, Ambalapuzha north, Edathua panchayats, and Haripad municipality area.
and also banned the use and sale of meat, eggs, and manure of ducks, quails, chickens, and domestic birds in these affected areas.
District officials said in a statement that starting Saturday, all birds located within a 1 km radius of the epicentre of the disease would be killed.
It said that 20,471 ducks will be culled and eight Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), each with 10 members, are engaged in the operation as per the directions of the veterinarians and to follow the central norms in this regard.
According to experts, H5N1 ( avian flu) or H5N8 is commonly known as bird flu, though many other strains are operable and infection can spread through their dropping saliva. There are very few chances for humans to get infected with the H5N8 virus.
In its 2016 report, WHO stated that “till date, no human cases of infection with flu A ( H5N8) have been detected.”
