Kolkata Knight Riders roped in England batter Jason Roy as their replacement for Shakib al Hasan in IPL 2024 season
The two-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), roped in England’s opening batter Jason Roy after their original skipper Shreyas Iyer, and Bangladesh All-rounder, Shakib al Hasan were ruled out of the IPL 2024 season. Jason Roy was signed for a whopping INR 2.8 crore from his base price of INR 1.5 crore.
The team lost the services of their skipper Shreyas Iyer because of a lower-back injury due to which he will also be missing his upcoming national duties (World Test Championship and ODI World Cup) and would be looking forward to making a full recovery. And the recent announcement of Bangladeshi skipper all-rounder Shakib al Hasan pulling out of the IPL 2024 season did no good for the Knight Riders.
According to the Cricbuzz website, the Knight Riders authorities confirmed Shakib’s unavailability for IPL 2024, and the reasons were cited to his International Commitments and some prior personal issues. Apart from the Bangladeshi Skipper Shakib, their wicket-keeper batter Litton Das has also stated that he won’t be available before April 10 as he is on national duty by being part of the active one-off Test match Series against Ireland.
Meanwhile, KKR Skipper Shreyas has injured his lower back which is an impinged nerve caused by a bulged disc on the right side of the back. Iyer was struggling with the injury since their return from the Bangladesh series in December 2022. He took 6 injections but still felt discomfort due to which he was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series in January and the first test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in February. Despite the injury, he came back and played the remaining two tests of the series against Australia but did not bat in the first innings of the final match which eventually resulted in him being ruled out of the match.
Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders introduced Nitish Rana as their new captain and the replacement for Iyer for this year’s IPL season. Kolkata Knight Riders started their campaign with a defeat against Punjab Kings in their season opener at Mohali.
