On Thursday, the Union of Vereinigung Cockpit Accused the Airlines Lufthansa of failing to improve on their previous offer, leaving pilots no choice but to go on strike to press their demands.
German carrier Lufthansa Airlines has said that it’s canceling almost all passenger and cargo flights on Friday due to the planned strike action by the pilots.
Airlines said almost 800 flights they had to cancel and it could affect lots of passengers returning at the end of the summer vacation. The airline’s budget carrier Euro wings wouldn’t be affected, it said.
Why did Lufthansa Take such an Enormous Step Suddenly?
The Union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) said that discussions about pay between employers and employees or a union that represents them have failed and the strike would affect pilots for the passenger airline as well as its shipment. And Lufthansa is declining to right away comment on it.
Strikes and staff shortages have already put their comments thereon forced airlines including Lufthansa to cancel thousands of flights this summer and caused hours-long queues at major airports, frustrating holidaymakers keen to travel after COVID-19 lockdowns.
VC (Vereinigung Cockpit) is demanding raise of 5.5% this year for his or her more than 5000 pilots and automatic inflation compensation thereafter.
“We haven’t received a sufficient offer today either. this is often sobering and a missed opportunity,” said VC spokesperson Matthias Baier.
Lufthansa said that they might continue to have a conversation with the pilots but can’t afford to raise what they are demanding.
“We hope to urge back to negotiations as soon as possible,” the Reuters report said a Lufthansa spokesperson as saying on Thursday. “However, we cannot bear the value increases associated with VC’s demands either.”
Lufthansa offered them around 9000 euros ($901.35) quite their basic pay per month in two phases over 18 months of the term as well as a procedure guaranteed cockpit staff in minimum fleet size, the Reuters report said.
The situation has been aggravated by inflation and the cost-of-living crisis brought on by the war in Ukraine and, in cases involving the Uk, Brexit.
