In the 21st and last charity luncheon with the elderly multibillionaire, Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, eBay unveiled a staggering offer.
Last Sunday, bidding began on the eBay website at $25,000. However, the price soared as competing bids competed to outdo one another, and it ultimately settled at a little over $19 million on Friday.
Since Covid-19 has cancelled the auction twice in the last two years, it earns money for Glide, an organisation dedicated to alleviating poverty in San Francisco. It supports the homeless by distributing meals and assisting them in locating housing, medical care, and job training.
For years, San Francisco has been plagued by a huge homeless population in a city with great wealth disparity.
Announcing the winner of this year’s charity auction, eBay said that the winner “has not only made history but will enjoy an extraordinary afternoon with American great Warren Buffett” at Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse in New York City with up to seven friends.
An American entrepreneur involved in cryptocurrencies, Justin Sun, won the penultimate pre-pandemic auction with a $4.6 million bid to lunch with Buffett, a vocal opponent of bitcoin.
Ebay’s announcement cited Buffett, who has been called the “Oracle of Omaha,” adding that he has met “a lot of intriguing individuals throughout the globe” via the auctions.
According to him, “the one common quality is that they believe the money will be put to extremely beneficial purposes.”
According to Forbes.com, in March, Warren Buffett was valued at $117 billion.
As a member of the ultra-wealthy Bill and Malinda Gates, he has agreed to give up half of his money. Approximately $48 billion in donations have been made by Buffett thus far, according to current estimates.
