Global Handwashing Day – Formation and significance
It is very essential for everyone to know about the significance of washing our hands on this Global Handwashing Day, Oct 15,2022. This day is celebrated to create awareness among the people to practice the habit of handwashing. These efforts will surely bring a change among the people, as we move ahead in this COVID-19 situation.
Global Handwashing Day was created by the global Handwashing Partnership to know about the importance of washing hands with soap. At first, this activity was held in several countries during 2008, where 120 million children witnessed it. After this incident, every year this day is celebrated to cultivate the habit of handwashing, building sinks in public places, etc. These activities are done by governments, NGOs, schools, etc.
Global Handwashing Day – Objectives
Teaching simple handwashing to lead a safer and healthier life is the main objective of this Global Handwashing Day. Washing hands regularly will help
- To solve Respiratory issues
- To reduce Diarrhea
- To increase the attendance of children at school
Handwashing Process:
a) Wetting our hands with water
b) Applying soap/liquid on our hands
c) Scrubbing our fingers, back of our hands, palms, and wrist for 20 sec.
d) Rinsing them well with water.
e) Drying our hands with a dry cloth.
Ways to celebrate Global Handwashing Day
- Sharing the significance of this day on social media pages such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.
- Promoting posters in public places such as schools, parks, offices, malls, etc.
- Practicing it in our day-to-day life.
- Teaching the habit of handwashing to kids and school students.
Some facts about Global Handwashing Day
- The theme for 2019 was “Clean Hands for All” which emphasized the importance of handwashing among all categories of people.
- According to the studies made by, “Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal,’ the mortality rates of many diseases can be reduced to 50% by following this handwashing process, which acts as a lifesaver.
- Famous Cricket player Sachin and his team promoted Global Handwashing among children during the first Handwashing event that happened in 2008.
- It is found that about 17 countries lack these basic Handwashing facilities and they need to have a good infrastructure to follow these measures.
