- Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested on Thursday the arrest and prosecution of BJP politicians charged with making inappropriate remarks regarding Prophet Muhammad.
- She also cautioned protesters in Bengal not to disturb regular life and cause suffering in order to express their dissatisfaction with remarks made in Delhi.
The CM’s comments came in the aftermath of Delhi BJP officials’ inflammatory statements against Prophet Muhammad last week, as well as demonstrations that ended in an 11-hour closure of National Highway-6 in Howrah on Thursday.
Before meeting with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at Raj Bhavan on Thursday evening, Banerjee called for calm and encouraged people not to be “instigated by a minority of individuals.” “I condemn the recent heinous and atrocious hate speech by a few disastrous BJP leaders, resulting in not only spread of violence but also a division of the fabric of the country, leading to disturbance of peace and amity,” she quoted this in her Twitter account, without exposing or mentioning any name.
The comments occurred when a diplomatic spat sparked by banned BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma’s insulting statements regarding the Prophet Mohammed while delivering a television discussion last month. Countries in West and South-East Asia condemned the remarks, prompting the BJP to dismiss Sharma as a spokesman and deport Naveen Jindal in response to global outrage.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has filed two FIRs that identify multiple persons.
They have filed two FIRs under applicable provisions based on social media analysis regarding individuals attempting to disturb civil order and incite violence along partisan lines.
One is against Ms Nupur Sharma, while another is against various social media corporations.
