Metis Engineering, a British start-up, have introduced its innovation in the market- a battery sensor that can measure the health of electric vehicles and provide exact insights on the condition of the battery pack.
Founded in the year 2016, the company has the policy of believing in improving the quality of Data constantly as they believe that Data is the core of any innovation.
Functions of the Battery Sensor Innovated by Metis
The British company made a battery sensor that could do several tasks which will help in building more trust in Electric vehicles and will also increase their sales. Major Functions include-
- The sensor will be capable of detecting any abnormal increase in the temperature of the battery. This phenomenon is called thermal runaway– A rapid and uncontrollable rise of temperature in the battery pack of the EV and is the main cause of fire in Electric vehicles. By sensing any abnormal temperature, it can warn the owner and reduce any potential casualties.
- It can also detect if there is a gas leak in the battery and where the leak is. It can prevent any unexpected explosions due to venting.
- It is next to impossible to detect the degree of damage experienced by an EV if it goes through a crash or even if it depreciates naturally over the years. With the battery sensor, it will be able to detect the severity and duration of the damage and provide near-exact estimation, even if the car is switched off during the accident.
- Depending on how the battery sensor is configured, 3rd parties can access the data to understand how much the battery might be damaged.
Advantages of having a battery sensor in an EV
Electric vehicles are still considered an evolving technology and have faced many unexpected challenges. Due to not having sufficient data to completely prove their reliability as a safe vehicle, among other reasons, the middle class is hesitant to invest in it.
Due to their sometimes unpredictable nature, many insurance companies do not cover EVs that have a lower range. They are not sure what kind of condition insurance of an EV should have.
Also, because there is no method to check the severity of the damage, insurance companies are unable to determine the optimal costs that should be paid. With the Metis Battery sensor, this concern will be solved.
Another advantage would be the stability of the used EV market.
The market for used EVs is still not big and stable enough as compared to conventional cars. Even if there are electric vehicles ready to be resold, the potential customers are hesitant as they have no idea of the condition the battery is in.
Unlike conventional cars, electric vehicles depreciate based on their battery packs. If the battery was taken care of, an eight-year olf car might work better than a 6 year poorly taken care of the car.
As there was no method to determine the condition of the battery exactly, the customers were confused if they should buy a used EV or not. This problem can now be solved which can help the market for used EVs grow bigger.
Metis and its Aim
Metis was founded by Joe Holdsworth in the year 2016. The company started by providing electronics and software design services to other companies. Gradually he realised the need for deep and exact data for maximum output and thus started delving into the area of sensors.
Joe aims to gather data through these sensors and provide the exact solution that the customer will be looking for from the data.
