A senior cabinet minister who was supporting Rishi Sunak in the UK prime ministerial race on Saturday is the first well-known person to support opposition Liz Truss.
Sir Robert Buckland stated in “The Daily Telegraph” that he now thinks Liz Truss is the “perfect person to move the country ahead” and that her ideas provide the UK its best chance of realising its ability as a “high-growth, high-productivity economy.”
The minister claimed that he had first supported Rishi Sunak because he believed the former Chancellor was “personifying what we needed” throughout the first parliamentary round in which Conservative Party members of Parliament selected the final two candidates.
As the campaign has progressed, Robert Buckland writes, “I have given great consideration to the subjects that inspire me and what I wish to see the next Prime Minister accomplishing.”
Further he added, “It’s difficult to change your mind on something this important, but I have decided Liz Truss is the best candidate to lead the nation.”
Robert Buckland Further Viewpoint
Reports that have Liz Truss clearly ahead of her British-Indian rival in the contest to succeed Boris Johnson as the leader and prime minister of the Conservative Party have led to the defection.
Members of Parliament frequently choose their supporters in these leadership elections with an eye toward a ministerial position in the incoming leader’s Cabinet.
“I know both candidates well and have collaborated with them in parliament and in cabinet,” writes Robert Buckland.
We have the best chance of realising our potential under Liz Truss’s ideas, which will help us build the high-growth, high-productivity economy we require to both overcome this crisis and prepare for the next.
It stands in stark contrast to the remarks he made in a video one month prior when he officially backed Rishi Sunak as our next prime minister: “Now is the moment for genuine leadership, that is why I am proud to back Rishi Sunak.”
The Foreign Secretary Liz Truss’ plans were not credible for the country, according to Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, one of Rishi Sunak’s prominent and enthusiastic supporters, who also claimed that Rishi Sunak has been consistent and unambiguous while Truss has “zigzagged” on matters.
