In a recent development, on Sunday, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the State secretary of the youth wing of DMK, strongly criticized the Tamil Nadu Governor for his stance on the anti-NEET Bill. This move comes as the state government seeks to abolish the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions in Tamil Nadu. The Governor’s opposition has drawn sharp criticism from Stalin who has expressed his concerns over the impact of NEET on aspirants, from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Udhayanidhi Stalin criticized the Governor by saying that he should change his name to “RSS Ravi” over him. He further added that Governor RN Ravi has practically no role to play than acting as a “postman” who conveys the decision taken by the Tamil Nadu Assembly to the President of the country.
These observations were made by Mr. Stalin as a part of his valedictorian speech that he delivered in Chennai, at the one-day-long hunger strike protest that was organized by the student wing and the medical wing of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to bring the anti-NEET bill in action.
Udhayanidhi Stalin held the Central Government Responsible for the Recent Suicide of a Young NEET Aspirant:
The Bill in question seeks the exemption of the state from the central examination known as NEET, which has been a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu for several years. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s questioning of Governor RN Ravi’s stance on this matter highlights the political tensions surrounding this issue.
It is worth noting that this bill comes at a time when a tragic incident occurred where a man took his own life after his 19-year-old son died by suicide. This unfortunate event further emphasizes the emotional impact that such issues can have on individuals and their families.
S. Jegadeeswaran was a 19-year-old NEET (undergraduate) aspirant who ended his life after he failed to clear the medical entrance test twice. No suicide note was found after his death. But the next day, 13th August, the young student’s father also committed suicide. Before his death, he condemned the NEET administration and held them responsible for his son’s death.
Udhayanidhi Stalin also lashed out at the Central Government by calling Jegadeeswaran’s death a murder. He also challenged RN Ravi to go out to the localities of Tamil Nadu and contest for elections and then impose his ideology on the people of Tamil Nadu.
RN Ravi did not assent to the Bill:
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K Stalin said that Governor RN Ravi did not give a green signal to the bill that exempts Tamil Nadu from the NEET (undergraduate) twice. According to Stalin, after the bill was sent from the assembly to the governor, he kept it in abeyance and then returned it to the assembly under pressure. After the State again passed a resolution for abolishing NEET in the state the state assembly send it again to the governor. This time he did not assent to the bill but rather forwarded it to the President.
In his defense, the governor said that since the bill was part of the concurrent list and only the President is capable of clearing the bill, he did the needful.
Protests are going on across the state of Tamil Nadu to exempt the state from NEET. On Sunday, while interacting with reporters, Udhayanidhi Stalin slammed the Central Government’s position regarding NEET and also said that their opposition party AIDMK has also joined hands with the Centre in killing aspirants. He further added that he had joined the protest on Sunday, not as an MLA but as a brother of the deceased youth of his state.
