The first cyclone of 2022 Cyclone “Asani” is likely to hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on March 21. After hitting Andaman, it will move towards Bangladesh and Myanmar.
A low-pressure area in the southeast region of the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by March 21.
It is likely to continue moving east-northeast, become a well-marked low-pressure area and lie over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea by Saturday morning, March 19.
According to forecast, it may also change direction towards Bangladesh and adjoining areas of north Myanmar by morning of March 23.
The cyclone has been named Asani by Sri Lanka. Earlier, the Union Home Secretary held a high level meeting regarding the storm.
The Union Home Ministry has asked all the three armed services to remain on alert. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Central Bengal on March 21. Along with rain, strong winds are also expected.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to go into the sea. An advisory urges fishermen not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
For Thursday and Friday. And from Saturday to Tuesday, fishermen have been advised to avoid the Andaman Sea and areas along and off the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
MP Kuldeep Rai has urged Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd.) D. K. Joshi to put disaster management machinery on alert. He also suggested that, as a precautionary measure, all tourism activities in the archipelago be suspended from March 19-22.
