As the city fears a sharp rise in Mumbai covid-19 cases, government hospitals have been asked to be on alert with an efficient number of staff. The Mumbai civic body has asked private hospitals to be on alert too. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, or BMC wants to organise a vaccination drive for the 12-18 age category along with booster doses.
On June 7, 2022 Maharashtra recorded 1,881 new covid-19 cases with a rise of 81 per cent from the previous day. There was also a case of B.A.5 variant from Pune. Mumbai accounted for 1,242 cases alone. Maharashtra`s Covid-19 case tally rose to 78,96,114 but the death toll remained unchanged at 1,47,866. Districts of Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalna, Akola, Buldana and Gondia have had no active cases as of June 7.
On the previous day, the state had recorded 1,036 cases and Mumbai had 676 cases. Generally fewer cases are recorded on Mondays as fewer tests are carried out during the weekend. On May 28, four patients of B.A.4 sub-lineage and three cases of B.A.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant of coronavirus were found for the first time in Maharashtra.
As of June 12, 2022 active cases of Covid-19 rose to 40,370 and deaths due to Covid-19 rose to 5,24,757 with 24 deaths in the past 24 hours. This is all according to government data. The daily positivity rate is 2.41 percent observed on Friday and the weekly positivity rate is 1.75 percent as said by the Health Ministry.
The active cases of Covid -19 in India comprises 0.09 per cent of the total infections. The ministry said that the Covid-29 recovery rate was recorded at 98.69 per cent. A single-day rise of over 8,000 Covid -19 cases has been recorded in the country since 103 days. A total of 8,329 fresh coronavirus cases were reported within 24 hours. The number of deaths due to disease has also been rising. The total number of doses administered in the country so far under the Covid-19 vaccination drive has crossed 194.92 crore.
Almost 17 districts in the country, including seven in Kerala and five in Mizoram have reported a weekly Covid positivity rate of more than 10 percent. While in 24 districts, seven again in Kerala and four each in Mizoram and Maharashtra have had a weekly positivity rate between 5 to 10 percent. Despite the increase in the number of cases in the country over the last few days, the rise should not be a reason to panic, said the health experts. The reason stated by them is because no new variant of concern has been found and the rise is only in a few districts.
The reason for this rise has been pointed out as non-adherence of Mumbai covid-19 measures and people`s lack of enthusiasm for getting the booster dose. This has made the population more vulnerable to infection. Even due to an increase in the number of people travelling because of summer vacation along with a complete opening up of economic activities, covid cases are rising.
Kerala, Mizoram, Goa, Maharashtra, Delhi , Haryana, Sikkim , Chandigarh , Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh are the states with a concerning rise in the positivity rate of coronavirus cases. Although the rise so far is limited to certain geographical areas , it is important to follow appropriate Covid-19 behaviour and take precautions.
