An infant girl was pronounced dead shortly after birth at a hospital in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir but discovered alive an hour later; she died today at a medical facility in Srinagar.
On Tuesday, the Directorate of Health Services in Jammu formed a four-member panel to investigate a complaint against the Banihal community health clinic. A newborn was reportedly proclaimed dead shortly after birth.
Dr Nazir Hussain Choudhary, Medical Superintendent of the government-run GB Pant Children Hospital, said the infant died around 6:30 a.m. in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Dr Choudhary informed Press Trust of India that the infant was taken to the Srinagar hospital on Monday after she was discovered breathing.
“She was a preterm infant with low birth weight and respiratory problems brought to the hospital’s ICU,” he explained.
Basharat Ahmad Gujjar and Shameema Begum had a normal birth at the sub-district hospital in Banihal, Jammu, on Monday morning.
After the infant was certified dead shortly after birth, her family opted to bury her at the Hollan village cemetery.
Locals objected to the burial when they returned to the hospital, prompting the family to dig up the hole over an hour later.
The infant was discovered to be alive after being removed from the grave. Her relatives rushed her to a medical institution, where she was transferred to Srinagar for specialised care.
The event provoked demonstrations inside the hospital complex by family members and others over the “non-professional attitude of the doctors and medical employees.”

According to Banihal Block Medical Officer Dr Rabia Khan, an investigation has been initiated regarding the event.
“We have already suspended a junior staff nurse and sweeper working in the gynaecology division, pending an investigation,” she added.
Muneer Ahmad Khan, Station House Officer of Banihal Police Station, said an open FIR has already been filed with the occurrence under relevant law provisions.
“We are awaiting the results of the government’s inquiry and will respond accordingly,” he added.
