In the upcoming 8 months, Odisha will be hosting 2 high – ticket international competitions –
FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup in Bhubaneswar from October 11th till 30th October, 2022(1) and
Men’s hockey World Cups in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13rd till 29th, 2024(2).
After hosting this international competition, India would be the first nation who hosted the 4th men’s hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela after the great success in Mumbai (1982), New Delhi (2010) and Bhubaneswar (2018).
Odisha is already assuming itself as a sports capital of the country
The match scheduled on January 13th 2024, this would be the second hosting of the most awaited men’s hockey World Cup by Odisha in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. Initially in 2018, Bhubaneswar hosted the men’s world cup and the FIH Pro League matches.
Training ground – Kalina stadium
After hosting the men’s hockey World Cup in 2018 for the first time, the sports department has declared Kalina stadium as a permanent hockey training ground for national men’s and women’s teams.
Though the FIFA U-17 women’s football World Cup is near to commence, the sports department of the state have developed four FIFA Football related training grounds in Bhubaneswar located at Kalina stadium (1), Capital High school (2), and the other 2 at state armed police 7th Battalion.
One artificial football ground is currently under construction in unit 1 in the capital city.
Some budget talks
For hosting these and other international matches in future, the budget is fixed at Rs 55 CR.
