Protests in Sri Lankan over the country’s economic crisis: a police spokeswoman stated that they had to use real bullets against the demonstrators when they became aggressive.
One protesters was killed and many others were injured after police opened fire on them on Tuesday, making it a first since the anti-government protests over the economic crisis began. A police spokeswoman said they had to open fire at the protesters because they were throwing stones at them.
Protesters blocked a road in central Sri Lanka, 95 kilometers from the capital city of Colombo, to show their displeasure with energy shortages and high oil prices. The roadway where the protest took place links the central city of Kandy with the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. It was cut off at many points due to a shortage of gasoline and diesel at several fuel stations in Sri Lanka.
A serious gasoline crisis hit Sri Lanka on Tuesday morning, prompting residents to take to the streets in unplanned protests. Tens of thousands of angry drivers set their Tyres on fire and shut down the major route leading into the capital city.
According to a police spokeswoman, curfews have been put in place by several police departments, including the Rambukkana police division.
Sri Lanka has run out of dollars to finance essential imports such as food, medicine, and fuel, sparking weeks of protests calling for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The nation is experiencing its greatest economic crisis since its independence in 1948.
