Social Media cybercrime dominates the crime rate in Navi Mumbai.
With repeated text messages, notifications, and PSAs (Public Service Announcements) from various authorities and the government, sharing of OTPs (One Time Passwords) and scanning QR (Quick Response) codes have cost Rs. 3.15 crores in social media fraud to 28 users sharing complaints. Online Social Media cybercrime has reached a record high in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
However, the crimes against women, online fraud, and social media scams have decreased by 55% in 2022. This is in comparison with the data of the previous year; 2021. Cybercrime has cost Rs. 7 crores in 2021. Over the time from January to December 2020, a total of 301 complaints were registered. While in the following year, 172 were registered in 2021. The numbers for both the years 2020 and 2021 remain almost the same. The number of complaints received stands at 776 applicants in 2020 and over 755 in the year 2021. 186 out of 383 complaints received are of social media harassment.

As time passes and as new methods of online theft are seen, with constant efforts by the government and other agencies to not share details online, online fraud still is very much prevalent. Online banking, sharing OTP, and scanning QR codes have resulted in an increase in the number of cases from 46 cases in 2020 to 105 cases in 2021. Not only have the crimes from social media increased but also the crimes from matrimonial websites have increased. From just one case
Registered in 2020 to three cases in 2021. While other crimes such as crimes from the Facebook request are at eight.
Since the numbers from Navi Mumbai are out, which were astonishing. Comparatively the numbers across the country would be shocking. The people should also be responsible for themselves and analyzing the person asking for OTPs and mobile passwords. They should not only stop people from accessing their passwords and pin codes but it should also be checked that they do not fall prey as victims to impostors. Along with self-awareness, the government and organizations should continue spreading awareness among the people.
