For the next general election, 15 opposition parties come together to dethrone BJP.
The next general election that is framed as the war between “democracy and dictatorship “, to defeat the BJP, opposition have decided to fight together. The meeting went on for four hours, although no seat-sharing formula or a joint statement was issued but clearly concluded with the promise of working together to defeat the BJP. The meeting,hence, forecasted the united front in Patna. This was one of the first official meet of opposition, the next to be held by Congress in Shimla.
Although there were a few heated arguments but the overall conduct and environment remained adequately enthusiastically and peaceful.
The meeting was commenced by Chief minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar along with Lalu Prasad Yadav. The starting note itself aimed at success of front, mentioning that as the election would approach, more and more parties would join the block. After kidney transplant, it was Lalu Prasad’s first speech in which he asked congress to spread the sentiment, the sentiment of BJP’s dominance over democratic government. This was repeated later in the meet by Akhilesh Yadav from Samajwaadi Party.
Throughout the meet, the congress played it’s role of being the generous member alike that of a senior member. The president of congress, Mallikarjun Kharge chose to listen to every party instead of speaking. The further proceedings included speeches and support from various parties including left leaders, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar.
Opposition trying to set a new narrative before the Loksabha election.
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress changed the frame of objective from ‘BJP vs all’ to ‘BJP vs People of India’ This was to further touch the sentiments of voters. Rahul Gandhi, the former president of INC, highlighted key points of the meet and gave a note on the need of unity so as to dethrone BJP and forgetting all past differences.
Opposition parties to meet again for seat sharing formula and campaign strategies.
This was a mere start to the grand campaign of united front ahead of May 2024 general elections. The front is yet to decide seat sharing formula,but as of now there seems to be no conflicts among the parties. The elections are still ten months away and the campaigning will soon be at its peak and the scenario then might flip for BJP.
