The Bhartiya Janata Party has been under fire from Congress for remaining silent over the ongoing violence in Manipur. According to party leader KC Venugopal, with each passing day, the prime minister’s silence demonstrates that his party wants to keep the conflict going. After demanding that an all-party delegation be permitted to visit the state, the Congress launched its attack the following day. There have been hundreds of fatalities, thousands of homeless people, many churches and houses of worship destroyed, and a state administration that is contributing to the issue rather than solving it.
Issue
Manipuri leaders have been pleading for the PM’s patience for a number of days now in an effort to get him to intervene. Everyday that goes by with no action is further proof that PM Modi and the BJP do not care about ending the conflict; rather, they want to prolong it. After Manipur’s web ban was lifted, many of us learned of the atrocities committed against the local ladies. Which was two months ago; in light of all of this, what does it mean that the administration hasn’t responded? If they are unwilling to stop the nation’s violence and cruelty, what does that mean? And yet they still dare to blame the incidents on the opposition-ruled state instead of the Manipur horror.
Government’s Ignorance
It’s disheartening to see BJP women compare the atrocity in Manipur to the violence in Bengal, which involved two tribal women attempting to steal from a market. When a group of ladies attempted to impose law and order, they started hitting them. But the police arrived at the scene. The police have opened an investigation into a case that has been filed. The only thing on everyone’s mind is when and how they will receive justice. K. C. Venugopal, general secretary (organisation) of the Congress, touched on the situation in Manipur and raised a few questions. Manipur has been burning for 49 days, he claimed. Will the Prime Minister leave for a foreign territory on Day 50 without saying a word about the current crisis?
Opposition’s say
P Chidambaram, a senior member of the Congress, criticised the BJP on Sunday for equating the situation in Manipur with that in Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan, saying that while it is true that there have been “incidents of violence against women in Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan,” they cannot be compared to the “relentless violence in Manipur.” The opposition has characterised the BJP’s “silence” as a diversionary ploy to avoid discussion of the situation in violence-plagued Manipur.
The BJP has brought up examples of atrocities against women in West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Bihar and questioned the “silence” of the opposition. Assist the state governments to act more sternly if necessary in Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan, according to Chidambaram, but that does not excuse the savagery occurring in Manipur.” The Manipuri administration has fallen. He claimed that the Indian government has put itself into a coma. In response to the video showing two women being paraded in Manipur while completely naked, PM Modi expressed his outrage and sadness, calling it “shameful for any ethical society.” Because the incident caused humiliation to society, he assured the nation’s citizens that the accused would not get off easy.
The PM was criticized by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for failing to address the House of Parliament. He tweeted, “You could have first dismissed your Chief Minister of Manipur if you were angry, instead of making false analogies with states governed by the Congress.” Biren Singh, the chief minister, has promised tough action against the culprits, and he has stated that his administration will work to have them executed. Violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur over a month ago claimed the lives of over 100 individuals. Prime Minister Modi’s silence was questioned by ten opposition parties, with Congress at the head, who urged him to meet with them and appeal for peace.
