Paul Wight will continue to compete inside an AEW ring.
The former Big Show shocked wrestling fans when he quit WWE in February 2021 after 22 years to join AEW. However, after joining AEW over a year ago, Wight has only participated in a handful of bouts. He lastly defeated QT Marshall at “All Out” before making intermittent appearances on “Dark: Elevation.”
Recently, he returned to the ring after his second hip replacement operation, which was performed in December. Wight recently spoke on Submission Radio to discuss his extended sabbatical from in-ring combat. It is mostly due to the aforementioned surgery but is also intentional so as not to displace younger talent.
“I had a second hip transplant in December. So, now I have two artificial hips, titanium hips, and I’m Wolverine,” Wight stated. Therefore, my attention has been on rehabilitation, physical therapy, and gaining strength. I moved here [to AEW] to perfect my commentary talents because that is where I see my future in wrestling and where I want to make my mark on the industry. But I came here to compete sometimes, in tiny doses; I do not see myself racing for championships; that is not my forte.
“Perhaps, if things work out and there is a younger talent I can assist develop, such as for a tag team title. I have worked five evenings a week for decades, putting in my time. Now, for me, it’s about not taking anything away from the incredible AEW talent that deserves that TV time, that chance to interact with the public, and that capacity to earn those pay-per-view paydays; this is their moment. And for me, I’ll pick and choose and fit in here and there, and we’ve got some really great things coming down the pipeline, but this has been an unbelievable card put together in an extraordinary sold-out stadium. These individuals are talented, and I am eager to observe them.
“So, that’s the logical thing to do, as I’m never going to be someone who bullies his way in and says, ‘I need my dressing room, I need to be battling for the championship.'” That is not my style. I will be OK as long as the company and the talent around me are successful.”
Paul Wight has been a member of the AEW “Dark: Elevation” commentary crew with head All Elite Wrestling announcer Tony Schiavone both before and after his surgery.
