PM Modi urges Russian President Putin to speak directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a talk. As per CNN, the talk lasted about 50 minutes on a phone call.
According to a source from the Indian government, PM Modi asked Putin to hold direct talks with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy in order to stop the war.
On request of anonymity ahead of an official statement from either nation, the source said, “President Putin briefed Prime Minister Modi on the status of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian teams.”
“Prime Minister Modi urged President Putin to hold direct talks with President Zelensky of Ukraine in addition to the ongoing negotiations between their teams,” the source added.
The Indian PM also highlighted India’s priority of the safe evacuation of Indian students from Sumy, Ukraine, in his conversation with Putin.
They discussed the evolving ground level situation in Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin briefed PM Modi on the ongoing negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
The anonymous source further went on to say, “Prime Minister Modi appreciated the announcement of the ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in parts of Ukraine, including Sumy.”
As per reports, Putin has assured full cooperation from Russia in the evacuation of Indian nationals from war struck regions of Ukraine.
Before today, both leaders talked on February 25th. Then, Mr. Modi requested an immediate ‘cessation of war’ and the evacuation of Indian nationals.
Earlier, the Indian Prime Minister also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. While maintaining a neutral stand, he appreciated that both parties were ready to hold talks with each other.
The main focus of the conversation was on the evacuation of Indian students stuck in Ukraine and India’s efforts to take the dialogue peacefully to the highest level.
India appreciated Ukraine’s assistance in the evacuation of students from warzones.
After their talk, Zelenskiy tweeted that Indian PM appreciated the evacuation process and thanked Indian PM for supporting Ukrainian people.
Last Wednesday, the leaders spoke to each other regarding the safe departure of Indian students from Kharkiev under Operation Ganga.
Till now, 15,900 students have been safely evacuated from Ukraine via neighbouring countries of Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Moldova and Hungary.
