Yesterday, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the President of Sri Lanka, declared a state of emergency in Sri Lanka, which has come into immediate effect from midnight.
Protests in Sri Lanka in the wake of the economic crisis have increased to a great extent. The President of the island country, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has declared a state of emergency from midnight. This is the second time in five weeks that he has declared an emergency in the country.
People are protesting against the ruling government’s strategy to handle the current crisis. One of the Sri Lankan spokespersons stated that the government has imposed an emergency to “ensure public order”. Following the trade union strike in Sri Lanka, the government has decided to provide the security forces sweeping powers in the nation.
On the other hand, during protests, the police force continuously fires tear gas on the protesters. Yesterday, the police attacked the students with water cannons and tear gas. The students were trying to breach the security check and storm into the parliament building as a demonstration of protest after the trade union strike. The strike enforced by the trade unions brought a halt in the nation, which demanded the government step down.
The protests at a high rise in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is facing long power cuts and a major shortage of food and essential commodities’ supplies. Sri Lankans are outraged by the mishandling of the current situation by the Sri Lankan government.
The citizens are contesting continuous protests almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, demanding the resignation of the ruling Rajapaksa regime. The government is pressuring police officers to use greater force in order to quell the nation’s outrage. The police are shelling tear gas and firing water cannons at the protesters. Many workers are protesting by halting work in Sri Lanka. Due to the strike of union trade workers, the already worsened economy of Sri Lanka is downgrading further.
However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has confirmed that he will not resign from his post in spite of the continuous protests all over the nation.
