New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind bids adieu to the nation, stepping down as the First Citizen of the nation, handing over the baton to the ever-promising Draupadi Murmu.
President Kovind congratulated his successor who will be the 15th President of India and the first tribal woman president of our nation.
On the last day of his tenure, he addressed the nation expressing gratitude to all the Indians, thanking them for their love, support and cooperation during his time in office.
To quote him, “Ram Nath Kovind, who grew up in a very ordinary family in Paraunkh village of Kanpur Dehat district, is addressing all of you countrymen today, for this, I salute the power of the vibrant democratic system of our country.”
Reminiscing the visit to his native village during his tenure as the President where touched the feet of his teachers in his school in Kanpur to seek their blessings and said it will always be among the most memorable moments of his life. “Staying connected to our roots is the specialty of Indian culture. I would request the younger generation to continue this tradition of being associated with their village or town and their schools and teachers,” he added.
The President overwhelmingly thanked the nation and the citizens. Furthermore, he noted the contributions of great personalities that our nation had produced. Referring from Tilak to Gokhale, from Bhagat Singh to Bose, from Nehru, Mukherjee and Sardar Patel to Sarojini Naidu and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, he reminisced how these luminaries lit our nation into the greatest democracy of the world, freeing us from the shackles of colonialism that had deterred our development and stunted our growth in every manner possible.
He said that the nineteenth century witnessed many uprisings and revolts and Indians were brought under one umbrella under the leading light of many such personalities.
Mentioning the efforts of the present government, he said that the contributions of many freedom fighters have been recognised under the aegis of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. ”
Talking about the rising intolerance among people towards each other as well as towards the government in power he urged the people of India as well as the political parties to deploy constitutional means to fulfil their agendas rather than taking to violence. He talked about resorting to Satyagraha in the name of Gandhi, urging non-violence and truth.
Illuminating the current scenario of the Indian Parliament, the President said,
“As with any family, there are bound to be differences within this parliamentary family, too. There would be diverging views about how to proceed further. But we remain a family, and the interest of the nation remains our top priority. Political processes operate through the mechanism of party organisations, but the parties must rise above a partisan approach and consider what is good, what is essential for the common man and woman, with the spirit of ‘nation first.”

“The pandemic has underlined the need to further improve the public healthcare infrastructure. I am glad that the government has accorded top priority to this task,” he said while addressing the nation.
He further added, “Once education and healthcare are in place, economic reforms will let citizens find the best course of their lives. I firmly believe that our country is getting equipped to make the 21st century the century of India.”
Speaking about the future of India he urged the citizens to take good care of the environment and to acknowledge the climate change as well as put their best foot forward in order to mitigate it.
