Over 98% of the country’s 4,796 registered voters cast ballots in Monday’s presidential elections, which were held in Parliament and state legislatures across the country. One hundred percent turnout was recorded in 10 states and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
By the end of the voting, it was clear that Draupadi Murmu, the NDA’s nominee, would easily defeat Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate. There were eight MPs who did not vote, according to reports: BJP’s Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dhotre; AIMIM’s Syed Imtiaz Jaleel; Shiv Sena’s Gajanan Kirtikar; Congress’s Mohammad Sadique; DMK’s T R Paarivendhar; and BJP’s Haji Fazlur Rehman and BJP’s Atul Kumar Singh (BSP).
Probably for the first time, the commission has purchased round-trip tickets for the ballot boxes. Previously, these were sent as carry-on luggage by supervisory personnel. To ensure adequate security, election officials occupy the seats next to the ballot boxes. Officers are responsible for transporting ballot papers and special marking pens.
The Electoral College is comprised of elected members of both Houses of Parliament as well as elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all states and territories, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry. These individuals vote to determine who will serve as the President of the United States.
However, the nominated members of either the Rajya Sabha or the Lok Sabha, or the Legislative Assemblies of the states are not eligible to be included in the Electoral College and, as a result, they do not have the right to take part in the election process. This is because they do not meet the requirements to be eligible for inclusion in the Electoral College. In a similar vein, members of the Legislative Councils do not participate in the voting process for the Presidential election.Â
Instances of cross-voting, mostly in favor of Murmu, were reported from many states including her home state Odisha, Jharkhand where she was Governor, Gujarat, and Haryana. The counting of votes will take place on July 21 while the next President will take oath on July 25.Â
