Priyanka Chopra has been a strong supporter of SS Rajamouli’s film, RRR, ever since it was submitted for consideration at the Oscars. She attended a screening of the film in the United States and publicly praised it. She also shared a photo on social media of herself with SS Rajamouli and MM Keeravani and wished the film good luck on its journey.
Priyanka’s support for RRR is not new, as she has previously worked with one of its stars, Ram Charan, in his Bollywood debut film, Zanjeer. She even hosted Ram Charan and his wife Upasana at her residence in Los Angeles when they were in the country ahead of the Oscars.
The celebrity
However, in a recent interview with the podcast channel Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Priyanka referred to RRR as a “Tamil film,” which has caused confusion. Given her past support for RRR and her familiarity with the film, it is surprising that she would make such an error.
Priyanka Chopra has been a big supporter of SS Rajamouli’s RRR film, having attended a screening of the film, shared a photo with the film’s director and composer, and hosted one of its stars at her home. While her recent reference to the film as a “Tamil film” is confusing, her past support for RRR suggests she is well aware of the film’s origins and significance.
The confusion
It’s ironic that Priyanka Chopra corrected the interviewer who referred to RRR as a Bollywood movie, but then in the same interview, she referred to the Telugu film as a Tamil movie. The interviewer had compared Bollywood to the Hollywood of the 1950s, when a few stars and big studios controlled everything, and Priyanka agreed, stating that big studios and a handful of actors dominated the film industry at that time. However, she acknowledged that the game has changed significantly with the advent of streaming, which has given more people access to make content.
Priyanka Chopra remarked that the Bollywood film industry has evolved significantly, offering mainstream movies with big action, love stories, and dancing. However, when Dax Shepard mentioned RRR during the conversation, she corrected him by saying it was a Tamil movie. She repeated this statement, describing it as a big blockbuster Tamil movie, similar to The Avengers. It is worth noting that Priyanka’s first film as an actor was in Tamil, titled Tamizhan, starring Vijay in the lead role. Therefore, it is unlikely that she does not understand the difference between the various film industries in South India.
Benefit of doubt
Given her previous experience in the Tamil film industry, it is reasonable to give her the benefit of the doubt. Regardless, it is clear that Priyanka is a strong supporter of RRR, and her past actions show that she is well aware of the film’s significance. Also, actors Ramcharan and Priyanka have shared the screen in the 2013 movie Zangeer.
Priyanka has been making headlines lately for discussing her choice to transition to Hollywood. Additionally, she has openly spoken about her experiences with colorism and her involvement in fairness promotion campaigns during the early stages of her career in Bollywood.
