As of now, almost 2000 Indian students have been brought back by the Indian government to India from war-torn UkraineĀ
As thousands of Indian students remain stuck in war-torn Ukraine, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to urge the Indian government to “share a detailed evacuation plan with those stranded and their families.” In the tweet, he wrote, “My heart goes out to the Indian students suffering such violence and their family watching these videos. No parent should go through this.
GOI must urgently share the detailed evacuation plan with those stranded and their families. We can’t abandon our people.”Ā Ā
Mr Gandhi has shared a video that records the chaos and commotion at Ukraine’s border along with the tweet. In the video, guards are recorded pushing some people by force. A man is heard saying, “Look, how are they thrashing the girls.” The footage shows Indian students harassed as they try to cross Poland’s border. The Polish government has confirmed that Indian students would not need a visa to take refuge in Poland.Ā
Since Thursday over 10,000 people have fled Ukraine as Russia began its special military operation, invading the country from multiple directions. Kyiv reported the death of over 350 civilians. Ukraine airspace is still closed.
The central government has drawn some plans with the help of Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Slovakia Republic to evacuate students from Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has issued a direction to students to not reach border points without having contacted and coordinated with officials.Ā Ā
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a critical meeting on Sunday to discuss the crisis in Ukraine. In a speech in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, PM Modi said that the centre is “working day and night to ensure the return of every Indian from Ukraine.” Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has focused on the evacuation of Indian students in his presentation to the Prime Minister.Ā Ā
Members of the Opposition party, Congress, have not spared this chance to criticise the ongoing evacuation policy. While Rahul Gandhi has been tweeting regularly about the situation of Indians stranded in Ukraine accompanied with videos and pictures, Randeep Surjerwala has alleged that the Prime Minister’s visit to Uttar Pradesh amidst such a colossal crisis signifies his preoccupation with the election campaign.Ā
