Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi government of weakening India in the last eight years. On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the grand old party along with other parties will defeat the ideological stronghold of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
While addressing the ‘Mehangai par Halla Bol’ rally in New Delhi, the Congress leader claimed that the ruling dispensation is “taking India backwards while spreading hatred and fear” and that it would benefit India’s enemies such as China and Pakistan.
“Prime Minister Modi has weakened the Indian economy in the past eight years. Our economic strength has weakened as a consequence of price rise, unemployment, hate and fear,” he stated. “It is an ideological warfare. Our party along with other parties will defeat the tyranny of the BJP and RSS’ ideology,” Gandhi said.
While addressing thousands of party workers at Delhi’s iconic Ramlila Maidan, Gandhi called upon the party workers to say that “Only Congress workers can now save India”. He also explained why the Congress has chosen to carry out a Bharat Jodo Yatra. “The government has closed all roads to Parliament. When we try to speak in the House, our mics are switched off. So, now we have to go to the people and tell them the current situation and hear what others need to say.”
“We must directly go to the people,” Gandhi added, “The media also belongs to the government. We cannot speak in Parliament and whoever dares speak against Prime Minister Modi, the Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation are unleashed upon them.”
Drawing a connection between the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and the current dispensation, the Congress leader argued that while the UPA waived off farm loans worth ₹70,000 crore, the Modi government tried to bring the 3 black laws back. He said the UPA brought MGNREGA but the Prime Minister criticized it. “It is because of our MGNREGA that millions of people were able to get jobs during the Covid pandemic,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi also praised the UPA’s land law and said that while it stopped land grab, one of the first decisions taken by the Modi government was to scrap the law, referring to the ordinance brought by the government in 2014 to amend the land law.
“The UPA saw economic progress therefore we brought 27 crore people out of poverty. In the last 8 years, Modi has pushed 23 crore people back to poverty. Modi talks about New India, Make in India but Modi is taking India backward, moreover spreading hatred and fear. This will only serve to benefit our enemies, China and Pakistan.”
During the rally, Congress Lok Sabha floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury urged Rahul Gandhi to return as the Congress president while Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party which is in power is not fighting against price rise but is only fighting against Rahul Gandhi.
“Right now, there is a lot of debate on ‘revdi’ which are freebies. When the Congress fought for poor people, they called it ‘revdi’ but when Modi gives to a few chosen people, it is ‘rabdi’, not revdi,” he said.
