On Sunday, Rahul Narwekar of BJP, was chosen as the speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly by a large margin. In the Assembly, 164 people voted for him.
On Sunday, first-time BJP legislator Rahul Narwekar was chosen as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, taking the position days after Eknath Shinde assumed the role of chief minister and the BJP regained control in the state.
Following the start of the House’s business at 11 am, the election was held. In the Assembly, 164 people voted for Narwekar.
He ran against Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress candidate Rajan Salvi, a Sena MLA and supporter of Uddhav Thackeray, for the position of Speaker.
Other MLAs in the state Assembly who cast their ballots were Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) did not, however, cast a ballot against BJP nominee Narwekar. During the headcount, both of its MLAs, Abu Azmi and Raees Shaikh, remained seated. AIMIM MLAs also chose not to cast votes.
In addition, he said that BJP candidate Rahul Narwekar defeated Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi, who received 107 votes, in the Speaker election by voice vote.
Since Nana Patole of Congress resigned in February of last year, the position of Speaker has been empty. Speaker-in-waiting Narhari Zirwal was actually the Deputy Speaker.
Important points about the new Maharashtra Assembly Speaker-
Mr. Narwekar, 45, was chosen to represent Mumbai’s Colaba district in the Assembly. He has previously been linked to both the Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena.
The Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman and prominent NCP figure Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar’s son-in-law is Mr. Narwekar.
Before leaving the Shiv Sena in 2014, he served as the spokesperson for the organization’s youth wing. He transitioned to Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party after his time in the Sena.
Rahul Narwekar contested from Maval in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, however he was unsuccessful. He was defeated by Shiv Sena member Shrirang Appa Barne at the time.
Before the Maharashtra assembly elections in 2019, Mr. Narwekar switched to the BJP. In the Colaba assembly elections, he defeated Bhai Jagtap of the Congress.
Eknath Shinde Govt Will Be Put to a Floor Test
Following the election of the speaker, the Shinde administration is anticipated to face the floor test. The Shiv Sena-BJP coalition’s four-day-old rule will be put to the test on Monday during the Legislative Assembly’s special two-day session.
Eknath Shinde has the backing of 106 BJP MLAs, 10 members of smaller parties and independents, and 10 of the 288 members of the House.
Shiv Sena holds 55 seats, NCP 53, Congress 44, BJP 106, Samajwadi 2, AIMIM 2, Prahar Janshakti 1, CPI (M) 1, PWP 1, Swambhimani Paksha 1, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha 1, Jansurajya Shakti Party 1, and Krantikari Shetkari Party.
Due to the passing of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke last month, there is a vacancy.
Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister, and Chhagan Bhujbal, the minister of food and civil supplies, are both members of the NCP. Two other party MPs, Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik, are presently imprisoned.
The Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration disintegrated on Wednesday as a result of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation the day before the floor test.
On Thursday, Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP took the oath of office as Shinde’s deputy.
What is floor test?
A floor test, also known as a “No Confidence Motion,” is a legislative procedure used on the House floor to determine whether the executive has the backing of the majority of lawmakers, with the confidence of at least 51% of the House members.
When an incumbent administration is thought to have lost the majority in the house, it is necessary.
