The former chancellor Rishi Sunak will become Britain’s first prime minister who is of Indian-origin by defeating centrist politician Penny Mordaunt and won the race to lead the Conservative Party, while his opponent, the former prime minister Boris Johnson says he could no longer unify the party, thus withdrew from the contest.
Rishi Sunak: United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister
Rishi Sunak is all set to become the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister as he wins the ruling Conservative Party’s leadership contest, which was prompted by Liz Truss’s resignation, last week. Sunak’s win came on Monday, days after Truss’s resignation after her ruinous policy U-turns and tax cuts plans plummeted the markets into havoc. The bizarre economic crisis withdrew a rare interference from the Bank of England.
Mr Sunak defeated centrist politician Penny Mordaunt, who failed to get sufficient backing to enter the ballot from lawmakers, while his rival, Boris Johnson withdrew from the contest.
The UK is currently facing an economically very toxic mixture of rising interest rates and recession. Critics blame the Conservative party for the downturn in economy and they call it a “series of miscalculations”.
The UK prime minister post is the “Greatest privilege of my life…”, said Rishi Sunak
Mr Sunak has to complete the task of guiding a deeply divided country through an economic decline set to leave millions of people poorer.
He has to steer the economically struggling days of the nation after his predecessor Liz Truss quit, accepting defeat. He is the youngest of about age 42 and the first person of color to bear the post.
Rishi Sunak in his first address to the country people after being named Prime Minister, said it is the “Greatest privilege of my life, to serve the party I love, and give everything back to the country I owe so much to“. “The United Kingdom is a big and great country, but undoubtedly we also face a profound economic challenge. We now need unity and stability, and I will make it my extreme priority to bring our party and country together because that’s the only way we will overcome the challenges we face and build a better and more prosperous future for our children and our grandchildren” he added,
“I pledge that I will serve this country with humility and integrity and I will work day in and day out to deliver for the British people”, Sunak said.
Prime Minister Modi Congratulates Sunak
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his tweet congratulating Rishi Sunak said, “I look forward to working on global issues closely together, and executing Roadmap 2030”, “Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of Indians in UK, as we transform into a modern partnership from our historic ties”, he added.
The UK had its third Prime minister in seven months, that is Rishi Sunak. Liz Truss who pipped him to the post and succeeded Boris Johnson in the party’s internal election stepped down after only 45 days in office, on October 20.
Mr Johnson, who came into the race again last week, in a surprise decision ended his bid for the post yesterday, cutting short a Caribbean holiday. He said he could no longer lead “a united party in parliament”.
Penny Mordaunt, the other contender, failed to secure the numbers and was out of the race. 180-plus members of the parliament support Mr Sunak far more beyond the 100-mark required to get the top job.
