The CIA’s Chief William Burns says that the Russians are backed by the concerns raised by India and China over the use of nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war.
William states that he does not have evidence of Russia’s use of nuclear power at this time, has issued a warning about the escalation of war if the Kremlin uses nuclear power, and has mentioned Putin’s statement about the war’s prolongation. in an interview with PBS.
In October, sources revealed that the Kremlin used Kamikaze drones during the attack on Kyiv, which act like suicide bombers and are relatively cheaper than missiles.
However, the attacks were concentrated on the destruction of infrastructure. The infrastructure in Kyiv has suffered severe damage; evacuations have taken place during the war, and people have shifted to safer zones.
Attack on Zaporizhzhia Plant
In November, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was under threat with more than a dozen blasts around the plant, and concerns were raised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is used to fulfil about a fifth of Ukraine’s electricity needs. It has six Soviet-designed VVER-1000 V-320 water-cooled and water-moderated reactors containing Uranium 235.
The reactors are now shut down as there is a risk that power cuts could overheat the cooling systems in the wake of frequent attacks, and measures have been taken to protect the plant.
Russian President Putin Response
Russian President Vladimir Putin in his meeting at the Conference of International Foreign Policy, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Kremlin has no intention of using nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine and that the narrative of using nukes is propaganda created by the west to secure its superior power.
However, in his meeting denied the accusations made by Ukraine on firing the missiles near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Russian troops since the early days of the war.
