After over 53 days of continuous bloodshed, fighting, and facing various allegations finally the war between Russia and Ukraine is coming to an end. Amid war, Vladimir Putin has made 9th May of great significance. Russia has declared the 9th of May 2022 to be the last day of the conflict.
Importance of 9 May to Russia
Russia celebrates 9th May as “Victory Day” over Nazi Germany in World War II. Today Russia marked its annual Victory Day parade to commemorate the victory of the Soviet Union in Moscow’s square. People were seen marching through the streets holding portraits of those who fought in World War II. This year victory day came amid this conflict which could add a new color to Russia’s victory.
History
Germany signed their surrender in World War II on 8th May 1945 in the Soviet-controlled Berlin. But Russia, then called USSR waited for the official document to be signed by the German authorities. The document was signed past midnight and the 9th of May was declared to be the Victory Day. Earlier in 1965, the then leader of the USSR “Leonid Brezhnev had declared this day a holiday. In the mid-1960s, the military parade with grand celebrations was introduced.
This year, Victory Day has huge speculation even more than before. For the past two decades, thousands of spectators gather in Moscow to participate as well as watch the parade.
Current scenario
On 18th April 2022, Ukraine’s president declared the starting of Phase 2 of war after Russia targeted 300 military bases in Ukraine. The tentative date for the conclusion of the war was decided to be the 9th of May. However, now the Foreign Minister of Russia “Sergei Lavrov” denied the media reports regarding the end of the conflict on 9 May.
The current events taking place in the central parts of Ukraine totally contradict the previous statement. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy established the same enthusiasm that they had won the war then and will win this time too and will fight till the war lasts. According to western media, Russia will use this day to upscale its military operations by mobilizing more resources against Ukraine. Putin has also described the “denazification” as one of the main aims of their military operations.
